Complex polychaete reefs in East Antarctica

چکیده
The majority of Antarctica’s biodiversity inhabits marine benthic ecosystems. Shallow-water habitats represent vitally important oases for productive and thriving communities, with links to higher trophic levels. Scientists have only a limited understanding these coastal ecosystems across most the continent, as there are many vast areas – including highly complex Antarctic fjord systems that never been surveyed. in provides invaluable ecosystem services such refuges ecologically species, along carbon storage sequestration (that is, blue carbon), acting natural negative feedback climate change (Glob Change Biol 2021; doi.org/10.1111/gcb.15392) 2020; doi.org/10.1111/gcb.15055). Limited surveys Vestfold Hills fjords East Antarctica identified several rare unusual stunning structurally serpulid polychaete reefs Ellis Fjord. Found subantarctic, formed by worm Serpula narconensis, were first observed 1985 reported 1988 “one largest known tubeworm world” (Mar 1988; doi.org/10.1007/BF00397776), estimated be over 8 km long covering seafloor from depths 5 30 m. Flow dynamics of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica
Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, i...
متن کاملSystems Analysis of complex glaciological processes and application to calving of Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica
Calving is a complex process subject to several cooperating atmospheric, oceanographic and glaciological forcings that vary in space and time, and whose relative effects are challenging to separate. Statistical ‘Systems Analysis’ is commonly used in engineering and economics to extricate complex ‘force–response’ relationships. Here we apply Systems Analysis to the Amery rift system, East Antarc...
متن کاملHolocene Climate Changes Recorded in an East Antarctica Ice Core
Ice core derived proxy climate records from Antarctica suggest that decadal , century and possibly even millennial-scale temperature variations in East and West Antarctica may be temporally asynchronous. For example, records from the Antarctic Peninsula indicate a strong 20th century warming in which the high plateau of East Antarctica has not participated. Similarly, a recent Neoglacial coolin...
متن کاملU^Pb isotopic behaviour of zircon during upper-amphibolite facies £uid in¢ltration in the Napier Complex, east Antarctica
Understanding the factors that contribute to U^Pb discordance in zircon is essential for interpreting isotopic data and for assessing the validity of concordia intercept ages. Modification caused by interaction with metamorphic fluids is often cited as a primary means by which significant or even complete isotopic resetting of U^Pb systematics in zircon might be achieved under subsolidus condit...
